Young people on beach

Firstly do not panic!

Many young people use drugs without any serious consequences.

There may also be a number of reasons why your child may be using drugs, for instance, they may be curious and want to experiment, see them as fun, relaxing and socially acceptable. They may also want to try to fit in with their peer group, or use them as a means to cope with the stress in their life.

What ever the reason, you would need to broach the subject carefully- remember many young people like to rebel- especially against their parents! However, it may be difficult raising the subject in the first place, especially as talking about drugs can seem a tricky maze.

"When talking to your child try to ask open ended questions to encourage discussion but do not be put off by confrontational language, as your child may be more shocked at you for raising this subject."

It may be helpful to know you are not alone in this and that there are ways to help you talk to your child. For instance it would be helpful to know the facts about drugs (see section below on ‘What are the drugs and what is the law?), especially as what is reported in the media is often sensationalized and not the whole story.

When talking to your child try to ask open ended questions to encourage discussion but do not be put off by confrontational language, as your child may be more shocked at you for raising this subject. Also try to stay open minded and honest and remember what it was like to be young once.
